I assume that the OYTS boats don't currently operate AIS transceivers (the boats don't show up on AIS relay sites such as

The boats will probably be fitted with AIS this winter.
It will mean that we will be even safer at sea.
It will also be more interesting for us sitting at computers watching the progress of the boats.

A useful adjunct to radar and will soon be seen as essential for training vessels. I noticed when she was in Greenock, that Stavros S Niarchos is so equipped. (Not that I would wish to compare her with our own fine vessels!)

It's a common mistake that AIS operates as part of the RADAR, it does in fact use the VHF.

Just so. Superimpose AIS data on your radar display and you suddenly gain valuable extra information about the targets. And you can "see" round corners! Another useful tool in the toolbox Smile
